In order to save operating costs and improve the quality of service improve service quality, IT processes and components are standardized. This requires that applications and databases can operate in a single infrastructure. To make this possible, Adfinis has taken on the innovative task Task to realize the fully automatic operation of the multi-master database solution "MariaDB Galera Cluster" on the container platform "OpenShift".
Situation & Goal
As an IT solution provider for the global travel industry, you need to offer a variety of services that need to be delivered with high efficiency and optimal use of economies of scale. The aim of the project was to standardize the management of the entire IT environment, including the underlying infrastructure. This should be achieved by migrating all applications and databases to the OpenShift container infrastructure. In this way, subprocesses and IT components could be standardized and automated. In the future, they could be flexibly exchanged and combined into new services.
The customer had already containerized all applications and they could be easily integrated into OpenShift. Now the mariaDB Galera Cluster multimaster database solution with its strict structures and persistent storage usage should also be operated on the container platform. The provisioning of a Galera cluster on OpenShift was a long-awaited feature that had not been created before. At that time, the functionality required for the implementation, StatefulSet, was still in development. In order to use them, new know-how and basics had to be developed.
Challenge

Solution
Due to the high complexity, the implementation of the solution was awarded to the open source experts of Adfinis, who are characterized by innovative solutions and new working methods. StatefulSet has been extensively tested and verified and implemented step by step in Open Shift. Thus, a solution was developed that provides the integrated monitoring of containers in OpenShift as well as the logic for restoring the cluster state in Galera. Thanks to the failures of the IT infrastructure, failures of the IT infrastructure can now be processed fully automatically and with minimal downtime.
